MANILA, Philippines – Rio de Janeiro is boosting police presence on the streets by 2,000 in the wake of recent violence and pressure to keep peace during the approaching World Cup. This comes after recent attacks on police units embedded in some of the city’s shantytowns, known locally as ‘favelas.’ Six hundred thousand tourists are expected to go to Brazil during the World Cup, which begins in just 38 days. -- Mornings @ ANC, May 6, 2014.
