Rio protesters clash with police ahead of World Cup

With just 44 days until the start of the World Cup, parts of Rio de Janeiro were engulfed in violence. Police clashed with suspected drug traffickers and demonstrators burned out nine city buses. In the Alemao Complex, vandals attacked city buses, forcing passengers out before torching them and leaving them to burn in the street. In the Morro Do Chapadao neighborhood, residents also torched buses in protest of a 17-year-old killed in a different police operation. The unrest comes just weeks before Rio and 11 other Brazilian cities host hundreds of thousands of tourists for the 2014 World Cup. -- Mornings@ANC, April 30, 2014.
