The area of Amazon rainforest that was destroyed by fire in just the month of August is as large as 4 million soccer fields.
That's according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research on Tuesday.
Almost 30-thousand square kilometers of rainforest burned down last month.
That's five times more than in the same month the year before and is also the largest amount burned in a month in the past nine years.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday that he will discuss the Amazon fires at the next U.N. General Assembly later this month.
Often referred to as the lungs of the planet, the Amazon rainforest produces a fifth of the oxygen on Earth.
