Emergency jobs for typhoon survivors

MANILA - The Department of Labor and Employment has launched a P50 million emergency jobs program to hire typhoon survivors for the rehabilitation of calamity areas. At least 12,000 people in Leyte, Western Samar and Eastern Samar will be paid 260 pesos per day to do reconstruction work for 15 days. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said they are doubling the budget to P100 million for another tranche in January. Economists had said rehabilitation and emergency jobs will help temper the impact of the disaster on the economy which economic managers said could take a modest hit. "The number of workers we have estimated that could benefit from the P50 million, assuming that we limit it to 15 days, will be 12,671 workers," the labor secretary said.
