UNESCO director-general says registration of comfort women documents depends on S. Korea, Japan

The head of UNESCO says whether to list the so-called 'comfort women' archives on its Memory of the World Register is up to South Korea... and Japan.
In an interview published Wednesday by Tokyo-based Kyodo News Agency, UNESCO director-general Audrey Azoulay said (quote) "we count on their cooperation to achieve sustainable solutions."
She added that reducing political tensions is essential for UNESCO to focus on its mandate, …and said she wants to respect the wishes of both parties.
Regarding the U.S. and Israel's withdrawal from UNESCO last year following accusations that the organization was anti-Semitic, …Azoulay emphasized that it has implemented reforms …like requiring a unanimous vote on decisions regarding the Middle East.
