UNESCO director-general says registration of comfort women documents depends on S. Korea, Japan

The head of UNESCO says the decision on whether to list the comfort women archives on its Memory of the World Register is up to South Korea and Japan.
In an interview published by Tokyo-based Kyodo News Agency on Wednesday, UNESCO director-general Audrey Azoulay said "we count on their cooperation to achieve sustainable solutions."
She added that reducing political tensions is essential for UNESCO to focus on its mandate, …and expressed her desire to respect the wishes of both parties.
Regarding the U.S. and Israel's withdrawal from UNESCO last year following accusations that the organization was anti-Semitic, …Azoulay emphasized that it has implemented reforms …like requiring a unanimous vote on decisions regarding the Middle East.
