Mares in gestation
It's possible to have mares in gestation compete. However, they may not exceed 120 days after the last mating. Only races that include the flat and the obstacle are allowed during a gestation period. There are few pregnant mares in the races. When they compete, broadcasters put a symbol next to their name to indicate that they are pregnant. As mares undergo a hormonal change during pregnancy, the energy overdose created by this change has been misused by some owners. Today, the official racing code regulates this practice and can condemn an owner up to 8,000 euros.
