The United States wants its all its allies to contribute more to shared defense,… and South Korea is not an exception to the rule.
This according to U.S. State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus on Thursday.
She said fairer burden sharing was one of President Trump's campaign pledges, adding it has been an issue Trump has been crystal clear on.
The statement comes after President Trump's tweet on Wednesday saying the allies have started negotiations to renew their defense cost-sharing deal and Seoul has agreed to pay substantially more.
However, South Korea's foreign ministry denies the talks have started.
U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who is currently in Seoul, will meet his South Korean counterpart on Friday and they are likely discuss the cost-sharing deal.
