Leading Japanese media outlets are calling on Seoul and Tokyo to resolve their trade dispute diplomatically.
In an editorial,... Mainichi Shimbun said if both sides continue to take a hardline approach,... tensions will only grow and there will be no way out.
It said if Tokyo removes Seoul from its whitelist of preferred trading partners... South Korea's boycott of Japan will only get worse,... and it urged dialogue and concessions.
Asahi Shimbun said that linking trade issues to political and historical matters undermines Tokyo's commitment to promoting free trade.
It said that both nations have fallen into a vicious cycle of criticizing each other,... and that they should not forget that they have many areas to cooperate in,... such as security and North Korea.
Meanwhile, the Tokyo Shimbun warned Japan's export curbs could have serious implications for its own economy.
It also called for the two neighbors to seek a resolution through dialogue, not confrontation.
