S. Korea, Japan at odds over Dokdo labeling on Tokyo 2020 torch relay map
  • 5 years ago
Japan is continuing to try and incite South Korea,... this time in the sporting arena.
The official website for Tokyo's 2020 Olympic Games has uploaded a map of the torch relay with South Korea's easternmost island of Dokdo erroneously colored as Japanese territory.
Seoul has filed an official complaint against the flagrant falsehood,... but Tokyo is brushing it off,... refusing to acknowledge it's a problem.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
During the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics,... Japan filed a complaint over the unified Korea flag which showed Dokdo as part of Korea,... labeling it a political move.
Despite the fact that Dokdo is historically, geographically and under international law Korean territory,... South Korea decided to remove it... to abide by the spirit of the Olympic Games.
However, on the map which shows the torch relay for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games,... Japan has colored Dokdo to match Japanese territory,... therefore falsely claiming it to be their own.
Seoul's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it lodged a complaint over the Dokdo issue and Japan's labeling of the body of water between the two countries as the 'Sea of Japan' instead of also including 'East Sea' as it's known in Korea.
It added the government summoned an official from Japan's embassy in South Korea to protest Japan's improper assertion of its right of administration over Dokdo,... while demanding the materials be corrected without delay.
However, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Wednesday dismissed Seoul's protest,... calling it "absolutely unacceptable",... adding relations between the two sides are "very severe".
The latest flare up came as Tokyo marked the one-year countdown until the opening ceremony of the 2020 Games.
