Seoul education office scraps "elite" status for eight private schools
  • 5 years ago
Seoul's education authorities have decided to disqualify some the city's most privileged high schools,... of their special status.
Seoul's education office announced on Tuesday,.... the performance results of 13 "autonomous private high schools" which have their own curriculum and admissions standards.
Eight of the schools including Kyunghee High School, Paichai High School, and Sehwa High School,... failed to get a high enough score on the evaluation to retain their status.
While the autonomous private high school system was expanded by previous governments to introduce diversity to the education system and give educators more freedom,... opponents say it has bred elitism and polarization in higher education.
President Moon Jae-in promised to scrap such institutions during his election campaign, but the move has been met by fierce opposition from parents and teachers at the schools.
The education ministry will have the final say on whether to uphold the local government's decision.
