Tutankhamun head set for London auction despite Egyptian protests
  • 5 years ago
A brown quartzite head of Tutankhamun is due to be auctioned off with an estimate of more than five million U.S. dollars,… despite Egypt's demands for its return.
The more than 3,000-year-old sculpture, which features the ancient Egyptian god Amen,… is on display at Christie's London auction house.
As the masterpiece came onto the market,… the secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities said he was disappointed it was going under the hammer,... despite protests from government officials and Egypt's embassy in London.
However, Christie's says it took the necessary steps to prove its provenance and the sale is legitimate.
It stressed it would never offer a piece where there was any concern about the provenance.
