South Korea's justice ministry says a record 16-thousand people filed for refugee status last year - a whopping 63 percent on-year jump.
Kazakhstani people made up the largest number of applicants, followed by Russians and Malaysians.
But, only 658 applicants were granted either refugee status or permission to stay in the country on humanitarian grounds.
The number of asylum seekers has been increasing since 2013 following a new refugee law.
