Federal officials fail to keep criminal undocumented immigrants from reoffending
  • 5 years ago
Richardo De La Mora was released from ICE custody in 2013 pending his hearing. He abducted and raped a woman walking down Tropicana Avenue. Daryl Willsey had repeated convictions that could have resulted in deportation to the United Kingdom. But ICE didn't realize he was not a citizen until he carjacked and pistol-whipped a woman in 2009. A Review-Journal investigation found about 1,000 state inmates have immigration holds. And a fifth of them are repeat offenders who remained in or reentered the country and committed crimes. ICE and the DOJ courts say they are trying to remove undocumented criminals. But statistics show the courts are doing less than a decade ago.
