What's causing typhoon-like heavy rain to hit southern regions of S. Korea?
We saw some heavy rains and strong winds in the country's southern regions yesterday.... with Jeju Island and Busan being some of the hardest-hit places.
So why the sudden typhoon-like weather?
Lee Seung-jae reports.
Heavy rains and powerful gusts slammed the southern parts of the nation between Sunday and Monday,... with parts of Jeju Island seeing as much as 400 millimeters of torrential rain.
The bad weather prompted the cancelation of dozens of flights in and out of Jeju International Airport on Monday.
In the southeastern coastal city of Busan,... the area was hit by 40 millimeters of rain,... with wind speeds reaching up to 20 meters per second,... causing a fishing boat to capsize,... leaving two missing.
In addition,... widespread damage was reported on local construction sites.
So what's the reason behind the sudden switch in weather conditions?
Well, experts point to low atmospheric pressure.
They say the lower the pressure, the stronger the wind can be.
In fact a typhoon-level low pressure of 997 hectopascals recently developed over the region,... causing the sudden strong winds to blow in.
Low pressure conditions are formed when cold air and warm air meet. Meteorologists say warm air from the north and cold air from the southern regions of Korea collided,... forming the prime condition for typhoons.
Strong wind warnings have been lifted for the affected areas as of early Tuesday morning,... but weather experts warn,... sudden heavy rain,... and strong typhoons could hit southern regions again this summer.
