NewsX Explained — JeM chief Masood Azhar designated as global terrorist: What it means

Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar has been listed as a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday. The latest proposal by the UNSC to designate Masood Azhar as the global terrorist is a major win for India against Pakistan, which is supporting terror groups in the country to wage war against India. The major breakthrough comes after Pakistan and China dropped their objections to the latest move. The United States, the United Kingdom and France, the other holders of the UN veto apart from China and Russia, had forwarded this proposal to the Security Council.

The proposal to declare Azhar a global terrorist had been languishing in the Security Council since 2009 when India had moved to act against Azhar and other terrorist leaders in the aftermath of the Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks. Later in 2016, after the Pathankot attack, India again moved the UN. But all these times, China, which is Pakistan’s all-weather friend and ally, had been playing the stumbling block by vetoing any such move to declare Azhar thus. The other Permanent 4 have supported India over Azhar.
