Eurocopter X3, the hybrid helicopter of the EADS group displayed at the DefExpo, Delhi...

The Eurocopter X³ (X-Cubed) is an experimental compound helicopter under development by Eurocopter. It is intended to fly at speeds of over 220 knots (250 mph; 410 km/h). The X3 utilizes a Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter airframe equipped with two turbo shaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system and two propellers which are installed on short-span fixed wings. This hybrid configuration creates an advanced transportation system offering the speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full hover flight capabilities of a helicopter.

Eurocopter is the world's primary helicopter manufacturer in the civil sector, offering the largest civil and military helicopter range in the world. Eurocopter is the world's number one civil and parapublic helicopter manufacturer, with a 30% share of the global fleet. The company's civil and military helicopter range extends from the civil EC120 light helicopter to the EC225 Super Puma and from the AS550 C3 Fennec to the Tiger on the military side. It was initially created in 1992 with the merger between the helicopter divisions of Aerospatiale-matra, France and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace, Germany. The group is now a subsidiary owned 100% by EADS, one of the three largest aerospace groups in the world.

By a process of successive integrations, Eurocopter has become Europe's leading fully-integrated aeronautical group and is, at present, composed of three entities: the parent company, Eurocopter, the German subsidiary, Eurocopter Deutschland; and the Spanish subsidiary, Eurocopter España. This ultimate configuration has enabled the group to have unified command structures, while at the same time respecting the national identities of the partner nations.

The EADS Group which stands for European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services, employing around 133,000 people at more than 170 sites worldwide. EADS includes Airbus as the leading global manufacturer of the most innovative commercial and military aircraft, with Airbus Military covering tanker, transport and mission aircraft. Astrium, the European leader in space programmes and the third biggest space provider worldwide, is active in all space activities, from large-scale space systems to satellite services.

The Defense expo in Delhi held subsequently, is worlds seventh largest and Asia's largest Defence Expo in the series of biennial Land, Naval and Internal Security Systems Exhibition. The first exhibition was held in 1999 and subsequently in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.The Department of Defence Production in the defence ministry is the organizing committee of the expo in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci). Some 567 global defence firms from 32 countries display weapon systems for the army, navy and also for internal security. It is a platform for suppliers, manufacturers, technology and services providers to get an opportunity for promoting and showcasing their products and services to the international defense industry. India is the largest importer of arms and ammunition in the world and exhibitors are practically falling over themselves to sell equipment. But perhaps the time has come to reverse that trend - to build equipment in India and export to the rest of the world.
