The three stands in Chepauk have been under legal issues since their construction. The High Court in Madras put a stay on the use of those stands as TNCA altered with the assessment report for those stands. In fact, a criminal case was also issued against TNCA by the High Court in 2013.The main reason for the tussle is the gymnasium of the Madras Cricket Club (MCC) adjoining the stands. In 2015, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of parts of the stands and asked the TNCA to send out the plan to the Chennai Municipal Corporation. Though the TNCA agreed, they are yet to get the necessary permission from the state’s Heritage Committee to start the process.

चेपॉक के मैदान पर I, J और K नाम के तीन स्टैंड्स हैं जहां लोगों को बैठने की अनुमति नहीं दी जाती है और ना ही स्टेडियम को इन स्टैंड्स की टिकटें बेचने की इजाजत है।तमिलनाडू क्रिकेट स्टेडियम और मद्रास सरकार के बीच काफी समय से विवाद बना हुआ है। कोर्ट का कहना है कि MCC और K स्टैंड के बीच 8 मीटर की खाली जगह होनी चाहिए। ऐसा करने के लिए स्टेडियम प्रशासन को 12 मीटर लंबे जिम को भी हटाना पड़ेगा, MCC स्टैंड का कुछ हिस्सा चेन्नई महानगर विकास प्राधिकरण ने विरासत संरचना का हिस्सा घोषित कर दिया है जिस वजह से इसे तोड़ा नहीं जा सकता ।
