Hope for ‘world’s fattest’ parrot as endangered kakapo have record-breaking breeding season
  • 5 years ago
Scientists in New Zealand are optimistic about the future of the rare kakapo – known as the world’s fattest parrots – after the birds notched up a record-breaking breeding season. At least 75 kakapo chicks hatched and are expected to survive this year. Adults of the critically endangered species only mate every two to four years. Researchers are aware of only 147 adult kakapos in the wild and have been monitoring their movements using radio transmitters attached to their bodies.
