Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits coastal Taiwan

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Taiwan’s coastal city of Hualien at 1.01pm local time on Thursday, April 18, 2019. The quake caused alarm among those in the area, but immediate reports indicated there were no casualties or major damage. Train services in Taipei were suspended to check for damage and school were also evacuated. The Central Weather Bureau said the earthquake’s epicentre was 10km (6 miles) northwest of Hualien at a depth of 18.8 km (13 miles).
