The Korean government has issued an advisory over the risks of mosquitoes carrying the Japanese encephalitis virus.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory on Monday, …after so-called small red house mosquitoes were found in Jeju earlier this month.
The warning came five days later than last year.
In more than 99 percent of the cases, the mosquito-borne disease is symptomless or causes mild symptoms.
But severe cases have a 20 to 30 percent fatality rate, …and older people tend to be more at risk.
In 2018, Korea reported 17 cases with one death.
The national immunization program provides vaccines for those under 12 years old.
