Well Mark… there is still no official statement on a death toll, but the chances of finding any survivors are looking dim.
Rescuers are working against high waves and strong currents, in an area spanning 150 nautical miles.
They have recovered some bodies and personal belongings and families are being asked to identify the dead.
Officials are also desperately trying to locate the plane's black box in order to find out what happened to the plane.
Flight JT 610 was heading from Jakarta to the western city of Pangkal Pinang when it came down just minutes after take-off.
The pilot had reportedly asked to return to base shortly after take-off, but did not indicate there was an emergency.
The plane was then said to have lost contact with air traffic control.
Monday's incident is said to be the first major accident involving a Boeing 737 Max 8 - an updated version of the 737.
Lion Air said the aircraft had been in operation since August and was airworthy.
It added that both pilots had a combined total of 11,000 hours of flying time.
Indonesia has a booming aviation industry, but its safety record is patchy.
