U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is urging Washington's NATO partners to boost their defense spending amid heightened challenges from countries like Russia, China and Iran... as well as terrorism and uncontrolled migration.
"... now is not the time to repeat tired excuses that 'our citizens don't support increase defense spending or security spending'.
Each nation has a duty to make the case to our people.
We as leaders have a duty to make the case to our citizens about why this work, why these resources, are important to keep not only our own countries but our alliance strong."
He made the remarks on Thursday at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Washington.
Pompeo stressed that convincing citizens of the importance of NATO could be a key step in confronting these threats.
President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have made similar statements recently,.... demanding a hike in defense costs of the member states.
Currently, the U.S. covers nearly 70 percent of NATO's total defense spending.
