Michael Avenatti, who shot to fame as the lawyer of adult film star Stormy Daniels, gave a brief statement as he walked out of a federal court in New York after being charged with extorting more than $20 million from Nike.

A federal magistrate judge ordered Avenatti released on $300,000 bond during a hearing in U.S. District Court in New York on Monday (March 25).

In his statement, the attorney said he will continue his fight against "the powerful" and he is "highly confident that when all of the evidence is laid bare in connection with these cases, when it is all known, when due process occurs, that I will be fully exonerated and justice will be done".

Earlier Monday, Avenatti tweeted that he would be holding a press conference Tuesday (March 26) "to disclose a major high school/college basketball scandal perpetrated by Nike that we have uncovered."
