Jayalalithaa's government is deperate to free Rajiv Gandhi's killers. Citing the release of Gopal Vinayakram Godse in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case, the Tamil Nadu government tried to drive home the point for release of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi's killers in the Supreme Court. Nathuram Godse's brother, Vinayakam Godse was a conspirator in the Mahatma assassination case and was sentenced to life, but was released in October 1964. Earlier The state govt had told the Supreme Court that they can on their own decide to suspend or remit sentences of convicts. It contends that the state government is empowered to take a call in certain cases and Centre should not tread into its territory.
