DMK and DMDK raise dhoti issue in Tamil Nadu Assembly

After a Madras High Court judge was denied entry into the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Club for wearing a dhoti, DMK chief Karunanidhi has spoken out condemning the incident. He said, "Wearing dhotis is Tamil culture and a ban on dhotis is condemnable. If there's a compulsion that a certain dress code must be followed in a few places, the government must intervene and advise them. That will put an end to such incidents."

The Left Front too has objected to the incident. "People have the right to choose their dress. Of course, in Tamil Nadu, it is dhoti as the normal dress of every citizen. Whether he's a judge or an ordinary building construction worker or anybody. The normal dress is dhoti. How can one take objection to people wearing dhoti and entering into some building? It is atrocious," said Left leader D Raja.

The issue was also raised in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by DMK treasurer MK Stalin and DMDK MLA Chandrakumar. "Not just the TNCA Club, all other clubs in Chennai do not allow entry for dhoti-clad persons. We urge the government to intervene and take action to protect the Tamil culture and dress," Stalin said.
