Faced pressure from UPA allies: Ex-solicitor general

In a startling revelation about political interference in the working of top law officers, former solicitor general Mohan Parasaran on Tuesday said coalition partners in the UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh put pressure on him in certain cases related to politicians.

Attorney general G E Vahanvati, who tendered his resignation from the top law officer's post to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, "Everybody had their points of view and wanted the law officer to take that particular line of argument. I will not call it pressure. It becomes pressure only when one succumbs to it. Ultimately, the decision was mine and I did what I considered to be the right course of action legally." He was solicitor general in UPA-1 from 2004 to 2009 and was appointed AG in 2009.
