More than 200 Indian fishermen are being held in Sri Lankan jails, for straying into Sri Lankan water. Even as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has promised to have them released by January 20, their families have accused political leaders of ignoring their fate.
A day in the life of a fisherman in Rameshwaram starts a little after midnight. He kisses his children as they sleep, wishes his wife farewell and sets out on his boat at 1 am. The women as is tradition, say a little prayer, hoping the gods save their men from the vagaries of the sea.
