New Delhi: Alarmed by the latest round of spurt in onion prices and fearing a political backlash ahead of a crucial round of state elections, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has decided to import the vegetable.

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) has been assigned the task.

"The government has asked NAFED to consider importing onions from China, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Egypt," food minister K.V. Thomas said.
