At least a dozen people suffered injuries in a jail riot in Varanasi when inmates attacked prison guards on Saturday and held hostage two senior jail officials, police said. Jail Superintendent Ashish Tiwari and another senior official Vijay Kumar Rai were held hostage by the prisoners and Deputy Jailer Ashish Kumar was seriously injured. The incident occurred after a skirmish between a prison guard and an inmate, Naga Yadav. Soon, it was a free for all as prisoners ganged up against prison guards and attacked them. As they went on rampage, prison officials resorted to firing in the air to prevent them from breaking out of the barracks.
