Inmates take officers hostage in Brazil prison riot

A prison riot in southern Brazil continued on Tuesday (October 14) as inmates held fellow prisoners and police officers hostage.

Inmates in a Guarapuava jail took 12 officers and 160 other prisoners hostage on Monday morning (October 13), according to the Department of Citizenship and Human Rights in the state of Parana.

The inmates were rebelling against sleeping conditions and the quality of food in their quarters, according to the Department. They also had demanded access to mobile phones.

The Special Operations Battalion of the Military Police, along with a Special Operations Unit sent from the state capital Curitiba, entered into negotiations with the inmates later in the afternoon.

Five inmates were transferred to hospital with one being treated for cranial trauma.
