Shivraj Singh Chouhan 's statement over Vayapam scam
  • 5 years ago
Massive financial and administrative irregularities, including unauthorised disbursal of application forms worth crores of rupees have surfaced in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB). The matter pertains the 2007-08 timeframe. The State Government's MPPEB department has a responsibility to organise entrance and recruitment tests for medical and engineering admissions and recruitment for Government services. The bungling was caught during an audit by the State Local Fund Audit office for 2007-08 when it was noticed that there has been a difference of about Rs 4 crore revenue earned from sales of application forms by the MPPEB or 'Vyapam'. The Vyapam scam has created a big flutter in the Madhya Pradesh politics but the way Congress has been reacting, raises pertinent questions on its conduct as an Opposition party. It is a fact that the issue was not raised prominently by the Opposition party ahead of 2013 State Assembly election. Similarly ahead of Lok Sabha election in May this year, the Congress did not choose to rake up the matter. However, state level leaders like party's spokesperson KK Mishra, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Satyadev Katare and State Congress president Arun Yadav have been raising the issue to target the ruling party especially Chief Minister Shiveraj Singh Chouhan there has been strange silence from the Senior Leadership of the Congress. Prominent Congress leaders from the state like Kamal Nath, Suresh Pachouri and Jyotiraditya Scindia have either been silent or speaking hesitantly over the issue. After long silence, Congress leader Scindia on Sunday night sought Chief Minister's resignation, that too on moral grounds. Clearly, the senior Congress leaders are not convinced that there is any significant evidence against the Chief Minister, and they have realized that it would be unfair to level personal accusations.
Speaking on this, a journalist from the State, Atiab Sheikh told Niti Central that, "This scam came on the surface in 2009 but since then, the role of the main Opposition Congress has been defensive which gives birth to many questions like whether the Congress's own leaders might be involved in the scam which can cause embarrassment for itself. By the time the Assembly election was over by the end of last year, an STF investigation was started which named several BJP leaders which could have been used by the Congress as ammunition against the ruling party."
