India News: Siyaram group lawyer says,Vihari Poddar is innocent, court rejects bail.

India News: The bail plea of Vihari Poddar, daughter-in-law of Siyaram Poddar family, was rejected by the Mumbai Killa court on Saturday and she is presently in Byculla jail till August 14.Ravi Hirani, lawyer for the accused, alleged that Vihari Poddar had been "targeted" by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials. He said, the claim that Rs 2.5 crore worth gold and diamond jewellery were found on her person at Mumbai international airport was a highly inflated figure.

"We were ready to pay up customs duty in court today, but the DRI lawyer said, they wanted to nab two more accused. This is unfair. Vihari Poddar came alone to Mumbai and there was nobody else with her", said the lawyer.

The lawyer denied reports that the gold and diamond jewellery were smuggled inside her undergarments. "Vihari Poddar is not a smuggler, nor has she smuggled the jewellery. We will file a fresh bail plea before the sessions court", said Hirani.


Vihari Poddar, the wife of Siyaram Silk Mills director Abhishek Poddar, was arrested on Tuesday night at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport while trying to smuggle gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 2.35 crore.
