At least 27 people were killed and over 30 injured in Saturday's Maoist attack on a Congress convoy in Chhattisgarh but home minister Sushilkumar Shinde is busy spending time in the US even after his official work is over.

As a result he will not be there on Tuesday to take stock of the situation. Instead, Union home secretary RK Singh will visit the state, along with the Intelligence Bureau director, to have a frank discussion with the state's executive about possible lapses that led to the grievous loss of lives.

Shinde was among the prominent absentees in Raipur on Sunday, too, where his seniors, prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and vice president Rahul Gandhi had gathered to pay respect to the deceased and meet the injured and instil courage among the shaken partymen.

Shinde, who was expected to return on May 25 after attending the Indo-US homeland security dialogue from May 20 to 22, extended his stay in the US by four days. His travel plan remains unchanged even after the tragic incident.
