SOUTH KOREA — Spanish firm Wavegarden has started construction on the world's largest surfing lagoon in South Korea.

The company is collaborating with Daewon Plus Construction on the project, according to a press release by Wavegarden.

The lagoon, called Wavegarden Cove, will be featured on Turtle Island, a manmade island built from land reclaimed from the sea. It will be part of the new Turtle Island attraction which is said to be worth around US$2.4 billion.

The lagoon will reportedly be able to produce 1000 ocean-like waves per hour across its different surfing areas. Activities such as kayaking and swimming will also be available.

According to a Wavegarden press release, different facilities such as hotels, convention centers and marinas will also be included in the island.

Turtle Island is all set to open to the public by 2020.
