Sahasralinga - The riverbed with 1000 Lingas | ARTHA | AMAZING FACTS

Sahasralinga is visited by a number of pilgrims, devotees, and tourist on yearly basis. This place lies in the middle of the Shalmala river flowing through the city, which gives you a beautiful look of countless sculptures of Shiv Linga inside it.

1. A pilgrimage site in Karnataka is famous as Sahasralinga (thousand-Lingas) because of the uncountable carvings found here.
2. Surrounded by lush green forests, this spot is located just in the middle of Shalmala river, near Sirsi district.
3. More than a thousand Shiva Lingas are carved on rocks are lined up by the riverbed.
4. These carvings are cut on the rocks, which include many Basava or Nandi facing Linga.
5. Legends say that all these Shiva Lingas were built by Sadashivaraya, king of Sirsi (1678-1718).
6. The water levels in the river are usually high and hence often the most of the carvings are hidden.
7. On the auspicious day of Mahashivaratri, pilgrims gather here ad celebrate through offering their prayers to Lord Shiva.
8. Surprisingly, similar sculptures are found at Kabal Spean, in Angkor, Cambodia, which is also known as the ‘valley of 1000 Lingas’.
