1. Pongal is a term used for Indian harvest festival, which literally means "to boil" in Tamil language.
2. It is a four day Hindu festival held throughout South India, which falls in the month of Thai.
3.This festival is also considered as the traditional Hindu system of reckoning the Sun God.
4.Pongal also happens to be the name of a dish made up of sweetened rice boiled and lentils.
5.The first day of Pongal is called Bhogi and is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra.
6.The rituals of Bhogi includes tossing useless items of household into a bonfire made of cow dung cakes and wood.
7.The second day is celebrated as Thai Pongal where Surya Dev is offered few food items which are cooked in earthen pots.
8.The third day is known as Mattu Ponga, where cows and cattle are especially venerated.
9.Kaanum Pongal is the fourth day and last day of Pongal, which has its roots in ancient Brahminical tradition.
