Hillary Clinton Calls On Ending Shutdowns As A 'Political Hostage-Taking Tactic'

Hillary Clinton on Tuesday called for putting an end to using government shutdowns as a means of gaining political leverage.  "On top of human suffering and lasting damage to our national parks, the Trump shutdown cost the economy $11 billion. End shutdowns as a political hostage-taking tactic," Clinton tweeted. The recent partial government shutdown, which was the longest in US history, began in late December over President Trump's demand for $5.7 billion in funding for the wall along the US-Mexico border and Democratic lawmakers' reluctance to give it to him. Trump, on Friday, signed a short-term government funding agreement that did not include money for the barrier, but he has indicated an intention to continue his pursuit of the wall.  White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has since said that another shutdown in the coming weeks is a possibility. Meanwhile, Politico reports that "the prospect of a second shutdown after the longest one in history is something Senate Republicans still take seriously despite rising hopes it can be avoided with a bipartisan border deal or even some sort of executive action by the president."  A committee meeting on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday.
