New beer made with rice hits Korean liquor market

If you're a fan of beer, this piece of news could be of interest.
A team of researchers in Korea has come up with a new method to make beer out of rice to boost rice consumption... and it says the method is helpful in adding new flavor.

Rice is enjoyed in many different ways in Korea.
Besides being the staple food in Korean cuisine, rice is consumed in the form of noodles, snacks, and even desserts,

But now thanks to scientists at the Rural Development Administration, rice can now be turn into beer.
And here's the full brewing process.

Roughly crush malt made out of rice and barley,...and add water into it.
Boil the mixture for an hour and then add hops and yeast.
Finally, let it sit for fermentation,...and the rice brew could be enjoyed just in few months time.

The team says black rice can make red beer...while white rice turns into a dense golden colored beer.
Researchers have also developed snacks made of rice that go along nicely with rice beer.

The brewers say the drinks have a crisp and less bitter flavor...and have been earning favorable reviews from testers.


"People are fascinated by the fact that there is rice beer. They are particularly curious to know how the beer tastes, and so far we are getting a lot of positive feedbacks."

Data show Korea's beer market is worth nearly four-point-five billion dollars,...and it also accounts for more than sixty percent of the domestic alcohol market.


"The color and amount of nutrition content like fiber and amino acid of the beers could change depending on the amount and type of rice used in the brewing process. Our beer products are developed to appeal to young customers, and we are expecting them to spur the overall rice consumption."

The team adds it is currently trying to come up with more rice beer varieties to meet the need of beer consumers.
