Claims of voter bribery in Malindi, Kericho mini-polls

Police are investigating various allegations of voter bribery involving Members of Parliament during the Malindi by-election that is currently underway.

In one of the incidents, police were forced to shoot in the air to disperse a group of youths who had attacked Lamu East MP Shariff Athman who was accused of buying votes.

Mwea MP Peter Gitau was also rescued from a mob mainly comprising ODM supporters who had accused him of bribing voters before he lodged a complaint of assault at the Kilifi Police Station.

Also ejected from a polling station in Malindi was Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu who faced similar accusations, as well as forcing himself into a voting centre.

And in Kericho, similar claims have emerged with the leading contenders, Jubilee and KANU trading accusations against each other.

Outgoing Senator Charles Keter says their competitors were allegedly engaging in voter bribery since Sunday night.

He has warned that any county vehicle from Bomet County will not be spared if found in Kericho County.

He made the allegations when he accompanied Jubilee candidate Aaron Cheruiyot to cast his vote.

Though a civil servant, he says he’s still a politician and will still support Jubilee Government at any cost.

Cheruiyot expressed optimism that he will emerge victorious.

Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Stephen Sang were also present among other leaders
