DP defends role of SRC

Deputy President William Ruto has come to the defence of the Salaries and Remunaration Commission which has come under scathing criticism from teachers' unions which have described its Chair Sarah Serem as a busy body.

Ruto says the Commission is a Constitutional body and its mandate as set out therein must be respected.

He has differed with the Employment and Labour Relations Court which found that the SRC is restricted to advising the Teachers Service Commission on teachers' pay and cannot dictate terms.

Ruto argues that the SRC is mandated to set terms for all public servants, teachers included.
