Opioids Overdose Surpasses
Vehicle Crashes as a
US Leading Cause of Death The finding was
published in a new report
on preventable deaths from
the National Safety Council. It finds that Americans
have a 1 in 96 chance of
dying from an opioid overdose. Americans have a
1 in 103 chance of dying
in a motor vehicle accident. Fentanyl is the
drug most likely
to cause the overdose. The council has
recommendations for
curbing the opioid epidemic. They include more
pain management training
for those who prescribe opioids, making the
overdose reversal
drug naloxone
more available and making addiction
treatment more accessible. Overall the study found that the odds
of dying from a preventable injury
have increased for Americans
over the past 15 years.
