Makar Sankranti is a mid-winter Hindu festival of India and Nepal. The festival is celebrated to mark the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere (or the beginning of Uttarayana). मकर संक्रांति को साल के शुरुआत में आने वाला सबसे बड़ा त्योहार माना जाता है। इस पर्व को दान का पर्व कहा जाता है। इस दिन पवित्र नदियों में स्नान, दान, पूजा करने से पुण्य हजार गुना हो जाता है। माना जाता है कि इस दिन भगवान सूर्य अपने पुत्र शनिदेव से नाराजगी त्यागकर उनके घर गए थे। इसी दिन से दिन बढ़ना और रात छोटी होनी शुरू हो जाती है। इस दिन से बसंत ऋतु की शुरुआत भी मानी जाती है।
