Swimming dog leads Taiwanese coastguards on one-hour long chase

This swimming dog was rescued after coastguards in Taiwan spent more than an hour chasing it through the sea.

Rescuers started following the mutt after it was seen dog paddling in the ship docking area in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on December 14.

It is believed to have been a stray that fell into the water after standing at sea-level on a set of concrete steps, then being knocked over by a large wave.

Marine police joined in the chase - throwing a rubber ring to the dog which dodged the help each time and continued swimming away.

They resorted to using a fishing net, and the dog was eventually hauled up onto a police vessel just after 9am that morning.

Captain Cai Ming Yi, who helped with the rescue, said: ''It took more than hour of following the dog in the boat before we could rescue him.

''I don't know how long he had been in the water before that, but he didn't look like he was getting tired. Perhaps he could have kept going.

''Next time he should understand not to go bathing in the sea. It's not safe for a dog.

''The police were very helpful in catching the dog, so we have to thank them for their work.''

The dog was taken ashore, checked over and later adopted by one of the workers from the docks coast guard office.
