Last year, remember a deadly fire in kamala mills had left the entire compound devastated as we ushered in 2018. After that incident, BMC increased the budget of the fire department to Rs 180 crores. But let's address the reality, in the last 6 months, India’s maximum city Mumbai has witnessed 12 major fires. 22 people have died in these fires. Imagine, for a city that has lost so many precious lives to fires, it just can't seem to get its act together. An RTI reply has revealed that out of the 10,000 fire hydrants installed in the city, only 300 are in working condition. While traffic woes keep fire brigades away, this basic safety equipment isn't working. NewsX does a reality check.
