Fine dust concentation at the highest in 5 years... 74% from overseas pollutants

Fine dust concentrations have been rising in South Korea... from the impact of yellow dust blowing in from China.
Dust levels have now reached a multi-year record-high... prompting calls to improve the air quality... and the overall environment here in Korea.

The concentration level of fine dust in Korea has soared to a 5-year high... mainly due to the inflow of yellow dust from China.
This is according to the National Institute of Environmental Research,... based on its analysis of dust particles observed between Sunday through Wednesday,... from ground observation data, as well as weather and air quality models.
The institute compiled data gathered from 5 air pollution monitoring centers... and concluded that the average concentration of fine dust seen on Tuesday and Wednesday... was at least 5 times higher than before the arrival of yellow dust.
The results of the analysis also showed,... that up to 74 percent of the air pollutants detected in the Seoul capital area... had originated from offshore.
Due to the effects of yellow dust,... the nation had issued 89 fine dust warnings from Monday to Wednesday.
In regards to growing public concerns over fine dust, the Minister of Environment, Cho Myung-rae said,... the country should work to reduce dust levels here at home first,... before blaming China.
The environment ministry also said... a special legislation to tackle fine dust will be adopted next year,... and that the government and the citizens needs to work together to improve the environment.
