A dog in Hewish, U.K. is being blamed for accidentally causing his owner to be crushed to death by a forklift last year, reports the Telegraph.
According to the BBC, a recent inquest concluded that the tragedy likely occurred after the victim, 70-year-old farmer Derek Mead, left his truck running in neutral in order to open a gate.
Assistant coroner Peter Harrowing said: "The most likely explanation, which I accept, is that the dog that he had in the cab with him on that day inadvertently moved the shuttle lever, causing the forward motion on the Manitou, which sadly trapped Mr. Mead against the solid gate, causing injuries which he did not survive."
And another official hypothesized, in part: "Whether the dog has been jumping up to see where his master has gone, or put his paws up on the door to await the return of Derek - it seems most likely that he has collided with the lever...which would have put the vehicle in a forward motion."
The farmer reportedly died at the scene, with a later examination finding that he had suffered from traumatic asphyxia and spinal fractures.
