S. Koreans visiting N. Korea for anniversary of civilian tours to Mt. Geumgang
  • 5 years ago
A group of more than 100 South Koreans are heading to North Korea's Mount Geumgangsan today to celebrate an anniversary.
It was 20 years ago that Hyundai Group started tours to the mountain for South Korean civilians.
Hyundai had suggested the event and North Korea agreed to it.
The group's chair, Hyun Jeong-eun is attending together with South Korean lawmakers and former ministers of unification,... while the North is sending around 80 officials from its Asia-Pacific Committee.
Hyundai Asan spearheaded major inter-Korean projects -- both the tours to Mount Geumgangsan and the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
The mountain tours stopped, though, after a South Korean tourist was shot dead in 2008.
Seoul's unification ministry says... Hyundai heading up north today... is purely to celebrate the anniversary... and has nothing to do with resuming the tours.
