The sheriff of Butts County, Georgia recently announced that the office has placed “No Trick or Treat” signs in front of the homes of area registered sex offenders.
The sheriff of Butts County, Georgia recently announced that the office has placed "No Trick-Or-Treat" signs in front of the homes of area registered sex offenders. Sheriff Gary Long said in a Facebook post on Saturday, "These signs are placed In accordance with Georgia Law O.C.G.A. 42-1-12-i(5) which states the Sheriff shall inform the public of the presence of sexual offenders in each community." "Georgia law forbids registered sex offenders from participating in Halloween [and] to include decorations on their property," he also noted. According to Long, this year's trick-or-treating comes with additional concerns. "The big challenge that we face here in Butts County, for years and years and years and years they've always done Halloween on the square and on Halloween night we would have anywhere from 2,500 to 4,000 children," Long told WCNC. With that event not taking place this year, the number of children going door-to-door in search of treats is expected to be greater than usual.
