2,000 sheep herded through Madrid to celebrate La Fiesta de la Trashumancia
  • 6 years ago
More than 2,000 sheep were herded through the streets of Madrid on Sunday. La Fiesta de la Trashumancia is an ancient festival, forgotten for many years but resurrected in 1993, which sees shepherds move their flocks to warmer pastures for the winter. The sheep are accompanied by dancers and musicians, colourfully dressed in regional costumes. This year marks 600 years since the Spanish monarchy first gave shepherds the right to transport their livestock seasonally, using driveways that sometimes went right through towns and cities.
